OVERVIEW
As a student journalist, I had the privilege of contributing to the inaugural edition of The Chariot Magazine, launched by the University of Buea’s Journalism Department in December 2012. My feature article profiled the Vice Dean in charge of Programs and Academic Affairs, offering an in-depth look of his contributions and vision

THE ARTICLE
The fire for justice and equity for fairness pushed this humorous “Fotabe Warrior” into journalism. Dr Enoh Tanjong originates from Fotabe, had his primary education there, and then moved to SASSE College and CC.AST Barnhill. He emerged from being a mass communication expert, with a B.Sc. honours from the University of Lagos, M.A. in Journalism and P.h.D in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin Madison, USA.
Dr Enoh Tanjong who is presently the Vice Dean in charge of programs and academic affairs, in the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences attributes his success to God.
“It’s God’s own plan for me and it’s God’s own image. Everything I am doing I owe it to God.” He elaborates by saying, “For about 10 years, there was no day I went to class one minute after 7 a.m. I’m doing my work and giving my best.”
Following his employment in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Cameroon, Dr Tanjong designed and started the Journalism and Mass Communication undergraduate programme with Dr. George Ngwa and Ndob Beltha. He has recently led this programme into M.Sc and Ph.D graduate programme. With a wide knowledge in communication and development in the Third World, Dr Tanjong has worked over the years on consultancies with national and international organizations, some of which are HEIFER INTERNATIONAL CAMEROON, PLAN INTERNATIONAL, WWF, RUMP! PROJECT to name a few.
Popularly called the “Pope of JMC”, due to his leading and fatherly roles, Enoh has successfully authored two books titled “Africa in International Communication” and “Media Balance in Sub-Saharan Africa’s Fragile Democracies”. He equally edited “Journalism and Mass Communication in Africa, Cameroon. In 2007, Dr Enoh received two awards for his outstanding contribution in training communication professionals in the country. One of these awards was given by the Cameroon Union of Journalists (CUJ) and the other by the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists(CAMASEJ).
According to Enoh, it took him about 7 years to start up the Journalism and Mass Communication programme, and he says if given the second chance, he will not regret coming back into the same profession.
Though this profession seems very rosy, Dr Enoh admits that there are lots of challenges as he is very interested in seeing the links between journalism training and practice. ”I want to continue building these training blocks in the best way so that there can be no democracy without journalism and journalism without democracy. As for democracy, we need a strong and vibrant media system and probably our own role will be part of the democratic dispensation. You might not believe it, if you have a reckless media system, you’ll end up with ethnic cleansing and killing each other.”
He added that journalists must not be reckless given that the newspaper, radio waves and television screens can make or mar. Aspiring journalists must take responsibility and have a scientific mind in order to bring out evidence to support what they report.
Dr. Enoh Tanjong availed himself of this opportunity to express his appreciation to some of his able academic generals who have worked tirelessly to give JMC a leading position in journalism and mass communication in the country such as; Henry Muluh, current HOD who is also in charge of stabilizing the department and checking excesses, Dr. CheTita Juluis in charge of quality control and also charged with the provision of a new visionary path for JMC Last but not the least, Dr. Victor Cheo, a strategic planner and mastermind behind any ground breaking event in JMC. Not forgetting other colleagues; Besong Divine Epey, Diffang Funge, Kingsley Ngange, Manka’a Tabuwe, Enow Bissong, Mary Kamara, etc.
